It was customary as long ago as the 1820s for young people to write letters to their friends at Easter time. In Finland the custom of sending Easter greetings cards dates from the closing years of the 19th century.

Here is a sample of some of the oldest Easter cards from the collection of the Finnish National Museum, which we hope you will enjoy. Below the same cards for seeing one by one.

The traditional Finnish dish is "mämmi" (brown porridge made of rye malt and water). In the old times it was made into birch-bark baskets. Nowadays it is made in board baskets.

Boiled eggs belong to the Finnish Easter table, too.

The Finnish Orthodox people have inherited their Easter customs from Russia.

Pasha, the most famous dish is made in wooden moulds. It is made of sour milk (kvark), cream, butter, sugar, vanilla and orange marmalade. There are the letters XB and a cross on the pasha. XB means "Christ is risen".

"Virpominen" is an old Karelian custom on Palm Sunday. It means tapping with willow twigs blessed in church on Saturday. Children go to their relatives and godparents and wish them good luck and health for the next year.

Via Crucis – Ristin tie pääsiäisvaellukselle osallistui noin 10 000 henkilöä.

Via Crucis - Ristin tie –pääsiäisvaellusta seurasi tänä vuonna yhteensä noin 10 000 katsojaa. Lauantaina 7.4. Ristin tietä kulki noin 8000 ihmistä ja pitkäperjantain yleisölle avointa kenraaliharjoitusta seurasi arviolta 2000-3000 katsojaa.

Via Crucis – Ristin tie on vakiinnuttanut asemansa mittavimpana pääkaupunkiseudulla toteutettavana pääsiäisvaelluksena. Via Crucis – Ristin tie järjestettiin tätä vuonna 12. kerran. Tapahtumapaikkana oli Helsingin tuomiokirkon ja Senaatintorin ympäristö. Vuonna 2007 toteutettava produktio koostui vanhan raamatunkäännöksen evankeliumiteksteistä, Mika Waltarin runoista ja Matteus-passion koraaleista. Produktion kokonaissuunnittelusta ja ohjauksesta vastasi draamaohjaaja Hannu Heikinheimo, käsikirjoituksesta dramaturgi Anja Kolehmainen . Via Cruciksen keskeisissä rooleissa nähtiin Seppo Pirskanen (Jeesus), Olli Tuominen (evankelista) ja Kristo Salminen (runoilija). Via Crucis – Ristin tien toteuttamiseen osallistui myös runsaasti vapaaehtoisia harrastajanäyttelijöitä. Kuorona oli Helsingin tuomiokirkon poikakuoro Cantores Minores johtajanaan Hannu Norjanen. Produktion visuaalisesta ilmeestä vastasivat Silver Vahtre ja Margus Vaigur (Endla-teatteri, Pärnu).

Via Crucis – Ristin tie –pääsiäisvaellus toteutetaan myös pääsiäisenä 2008.

On the evening of Easter Saturday, the 26th of March, the annual procession of Via Crucis, will again take place in Helsinki for the 10th time. The moving dramatisation of the stages of the cross attracts thousands of people every year.

The procession starts from the Kaisaniemi Park via House of Estates, and ends in Senate Square. After the Via Crucis, the Easter Marsh will begin at the Helsinki Cathedral at 11 pm.
